What's Happening in Brave Cohort
We are rocking along in our new STEAM cycle on land formation, where we are learning map skills and geography. We've researched the lithosphere, biosphere, cryosphere and other "spheres." We've begun a webquest on plate tectonics. Later the students will study volcanoes, tsunamis, earthquakes, and other land formations. STEAM sharing day will be planned soon and I'll post the date and time.
During this literacy cycle we are reading and writing historical fiction. Students are one-third of the way in the book Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry. We will participate in a vocabulary study from the book and contribute to book club discussion groups. Students will each have a turn being the discussion leader and directing our conversation about the Logan family.
In writing students are creating a historical fiction picture book. We compared several picture books to discover the average amount of words, pictures and pages. We've read two mentor texts Barefoot and Back of the Bus. Students will illustrate their work as well as compose the story. Several visiting artists have been sharing how best to create the images for their story.
I'm excited by the topics the students have chosen for their stories.
