Guest Expert Visit: Ms. Kastner
We just began a historical fiction picture book study. For their final project, all of the students will use their understandings of story arc, setting, and character to write their own historical fiction picture books.
Yesterday all the cohorts were privileged to listen to Ms. Jill Kastner speak with us about how to write and illustrate picture books.
Ms. Kastner shared her expertise about how to brainstorm and plan the layout of our picture books. She spoke about using perspective to change the mood of an illustration. She also spoke about the different ways to organize text and illustrations on a page.
Students are reading historical fiction chapter books, as well as picture books. Students are studying Mildred Taylor's Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry and writing responses about its physical and emotional setting. For class read aloud, we are reading The Watsons Go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis.
