We are finishing up our addition unit. Students worked on adding four-digit numbers with the standard algorithm and other methods. Students have also been practicing mental math using strategies such as breaking numbers apart based on place value, estimating, and rounding. Today, students used base ten cubes to deepen their understanding of the addition algorithm. It's one thing to know the algorithm, it's another thing to conceptualize why the algorithm works (e.g. Why do we "carry the 1?")
Today students also began a subtraction unit by studying subtraction word problems.

This new year we are doing math centers on Fridays. Students rotate through centers throughout class, practicing skills (e.g. multiplication basic facts), playing math games, and having small groups with a teacher.
Friday centers are also a time when students play a little "Prodigy," Thunder and Lightning's favorite math game. Students are able to play Prodigy from their home account if they log in using their school gmail account.
