Beginning the New Year...
Courageous cohort is starting off the new year 2020 with a study of words and will learn how impactful our words can be.
In reading, we are reading a diary-style book called Love That Dog by Sharon Creech. The book is about a 13-year-old boy who doesn't think poetry writing is for him but discovers that he has a natural gift for using words to convey emotion and to tell stories.
In writing, students are learning and practicing the components of several styles of poetry including haiku, cinquain, and free verse.
In STEAM, we will study an author from the Harlem Renaissance or Civil Rights Movement. They will be reading either a song, poem, or speech of their assigned author and research how his or her words impacted the people and society. They will also create an artifact that will follow the artistic style of Jacob Lawrence.
In fifth grade math, students are honing skills in larger digit multiplication and division. They are working to become efficient algorithm users. Students will partake in a special project on algorithms that differ from the one taught in the United States.
In fourth grade math, the learning focus is geometry. Students are calculating area and perimeter. They are also classifying polygons.
It's the second day back, and the students are already eager to dive deeply into our new unit. Excited to see them grow in 2020!
