Brave's Mini Term Literacy Project

"Have you ever wanted to run away?" This is a question the Brave cohort discussed as they began reading From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. Many students shared that they indeed have plotted to, or have tried to, run away. Many a plan was thwarted by hunger though. Which leads us to the book we are reading during mini term.

The two main characters run away to the Metropolitan Museum of Art where they discover a mystery surrounding one of the statues. They sleep and live in the museum for a week. While living in the museum, they figure out that the statue was sold to the museum by Mrs. Basil E Frankweiler and they go find her to help solve the mystery. The book has many references to this museum and the city of New York.

As a class, the students are discovering language that is interesting and perhaps, unknown to them. We are discussing passages that help us understand the characters, the story elements and setting. We are learning how to have a book club about a book.

When the class finishes the book, they may choose from an array of activities to show what they know.
Students will share on Thursday, December 19, from 10:30-11 a.m., in the Thunder Room. We hope you'll join us.

Students studied the rules for possessive nouns.  The placement of that little apostrophe changes everything! Students created cartoons that demonstrate the difference between singular and plural possessives. Here are a couple things we noticed about their work: The students' drawings are creative. Each student's idea is unique. Students have been completing projects in math. Fourth grade students are ordering fractions on a number line.   The fifth graders are working hard, too. Fifth graders are learning good note taking skills and are using that skill to inform their understand of reciprocals and the inverse property. All of this is part of their study of fraction multiplication and division. Students went to free cone day!

More than One Way to Solve a Problem

Have you ever used the Egyptian method for large digit multiplication? How about the Mayan? Did you know there were different algorithms and methods for solving these types of problems? Fifth grade math students did some research and created displays on algorithms from around the world. Students have been refining and improving their accuracy and efficiency with the United States standard algorithm   During our course of study, the Investigations curriculum asks the students to use at least two ways to solve multi digit multiplication problems. Many have relied on the box method. Because of this study of world algorithms, we have seen the students pick up more strategies to bring to their mathematical problem solving.
