Some Things We've Been Talking About
What is an Upstander? What does an Upstander look like? How is it hard to be an Upstander? These are questions Brave cohort has been pondering and discussing in our class meetings. Students decided that an upstander is a person who helps someone out when they're in trouble. That upstanders can speak to bullies and tell them to stop.
Conversely, our community discussed what a bully is and how it's different than someone unintentionally being mean or intentionally being mean just one time. Students decided that bullying looks like someone who has no self-control and says mean, disrespectful and unkind things. That a bully tears down your defenses and controls how you feel about yourself. That bullies can make it seem that everyone doesn't like you.
The students are trying to compose a covenant that includes a plan for treating people well and being someone who "stands up" for someone else even if it's scary, hard and you worry that you'll be picked on next. Here are a few of their suggested covenants:
