Can you create a building with a zero carbon footprint?
Can you create a building with a zero carbon footprint? That was the question of the day at our field trip to the Center for Architecture on Tuesday. Students heard about various ways architects and engineers throughout the world are using alternative sources of energy and "green" planning to create buildings and spaces that lower the carbon footprint.
Students learned about devices such as plant walls, roof top gardens, kinetic power, water wheels, wind turbines, heat exchange, proper placement of solar panels and overhangs, and rotating houses. They incorporated this information into their plan for their own building.

Once students were given the challenge, they received a certification sheet so as they created their space, they would see how their build measured up on the green scale.
Students were able to choose from many materials to create their space.
Some named their builds. This one is called "The Duck."
Some strayed from their original plan. Some matched it pretty well.
Many of their designs were beautiful and well built. If your child is interested, the Center for Architecture offers summer and break programs. We sure had fun!
