Spring Term is in Full Swing!
We are continuing to build community and grow as students in Thunder and Lightning. In Spring we are maintaining the behaviors and procedures that will carry us through to a strong finish. Expectations for work, behavior and procedures are high, knowing the students are ready to achieve great things.
First is morning work where students are practicing grammar and math concepts. Today students wrote imperative sentences and multiplied three numbers by two numbers. During this time students also have time to catch up with each other, and consider the latest book order. At 8:30 we greet one another, play a game and pray for the day.
All of Thunder and Lightning math students are studying fractions. They are ordering, comparing, adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing and simplifying. Fifth graders have also starting practicing the concept of cross cancellation.
Next up is park, and on a gorgeous spring day, students enjoy it to the fullest. Park games include four square, Ga Ga, dodgeball, Capture the Flag, and games in the field.
After park and lunch, students head to their special classes including PE, Music, Art, and Spanish.
On Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays, students spend 55 minutes in STEAM. This cycle, the students are researching energy sources such as solar, wind, and fossil fuels. They are answering the big questions: "How does my energy source work? How does my energy source impact the world?" Students are in the model building phase.
In Worship, all of Mustard Seed School students are studying the life of Christ during the Lenten season. Students reflect in their Lent journals which the children share about in the closing meeting.

Next up is Literacy. Students are working on the skills of summarizing and paraphrasing nonfiction information. They've read articles, scoured websites and watched videos to practice the skill. This week students have read articles on wolves, robo helpers and Amelia Earhart. In writing, they're finishing the third of three descriptive essays.
