I LOVE MATH DAY COMING UP


I Love Math Day is coming up next week.  Every year we take February 14 to declare our love of mathematics, and to celebrate all of the great math work students are doing in the school.  
If you have been following the I Love Math blog (I Love Math Day Blogspot,) you have seen several of the problems that students are working on.  They have produced many insightful submissions to demonstrate their thinking.
Also on Feb. 14, we invite visitors to come and share how they use math in their professional and personal lives.  Last year, we had three alumni come and talk to the students.

This year we are fortunate to have Yvonne Thevenot as one of our guests.  She is the Founder and Executive Director of STEM Kids NYC.  She runs the STEM after-school program at Mustard Seed, and she is also the parent of a Mustard Seed alum (Blaise, '17).  Also coming are two alumni, Andrew Flores and Nick Martino.  They will both be ready to share how their math education has prepared them for adult life.  

During I Love Math Day, some student teams have the chance to present their great work.


And we add time for some guessing games and other math puzzles.

Students studied the rules for possessive nouns.  The placement of that little apostrophe changes everything! Students created cartoons that demonstrate the difference between singular and plural possessives. Here are a couple things we noticed about their work: The students' drawings are creative. Each student's idea is unique. Students have been completing projects in math. Fourth grade students are ordering fractions on a number line.   The fifth graders are working hard, too. Fifth graders are learning good note taking skills and are using that skill to inform their understand of reciprocals and the inverse property. All of this is part of their study of fraction multiplication and division. Students went to free cone day!

More than One Way to Solve a Problem

Have you ever used the Egyptian method for large digit multiplication? How about the Mayan? Did you know there were different algorithms and methods for solving these types of problems? Fifth grade math students did some research and created displays on algorithms from around the world. Students have been refining and improving their accuracy and efficiency with the United States standard algorithm   During our course of study, the Investigations curriculum asks the students to use at least two ways to solve multi digit multiplication problems. Many have relied on the box method. Because of this study of world algorithms, we have seen the students pick up more strategies to bring to their mathematical problem solving.
