Las Posadas is Coming!

Las Posadas is next week! Get out your wiseman bathrobe, dust off your angel wings, and get ready for a sea of serapes!
Students in grades 6-8 will lead this traditional Mexican celebration again this year.


The Pros and musical guests will lead us in singing "Canción de las posadas" as we walk around Church Square Park looking for room for Joseph and Mary.

The Songsters, Choristers, Pros, and Chorus will serenade us, we will sing carols together, and we will hear the Christmas story.  

Las Posadas FAQs

On Wednesday, December 20th, all students in grades K-8 will participate in Las Posadas. In this celebration we commemorate the journey of Mary and Joseph as they traveled to Bethlehem and searched for a place to stay. After being turned away in various places around Church Square Park, we return to Mustard Seed School where Mary, Joseph, and the entire school community are welcomed for a telling of the Christmas story and music from students in grades 2-8.
What time should we be at the park?
Parents and children (K-5) should gather around the gazebo in Church Square Park by 6:10pm. The Pros and students in grades 6-8 should arrive by 6:00pm. The processions starts at 6:30pm.

What is the song we sing as we process?
We all sing “Canción de Las Posadas” as we process. The sheet music is below as well as a video here!

Students studied the rules for possessive nouns.  The placement of that little apostrophe changes everything! Students created cartoons that demonstrate the difference between singular and plural possessives. Here are a couple things we noticed about their work: The students' drawings are creative. Each student's idea is unique. Students have been completing projects in math. Fourth grade students are ordering fractions on a number line.   The fifth graders are working hard, too. Fifth graders are learning good note taking skills and are using that skill to inform their understand of reciprocals and the inverse property. All of this is part of their study of fraction multiplication and division. Students went to free cone day!

More than One Way to Solve a Problem

Have you ever used the Egyptian method for large digit multiplication? How about the Mayan? Did you know there were different algorithms and methods for solving these types of problems? Fifth grade math students did some research and created displays on algorithms from around the world. Students have been refining and improving their accuracy and efficiency with the United States standard algorithm   During our course of study, the Investigations curriculum asks the students to use at least two ways to solve multi digit multiplication problems. Many have relied on the box method. Because of this study of world algorithms, we have seen the students pick up more strategies to bring to their mathematical problem solving.
