How's Your Summer Reading Going?
I know I've been enjoying reading this summer. Here are a few summaries from your classmates.
Where the Sidewalk Ends
Lots of the poems in Where the Sidewalk Ends were really funny especially Jimmy Jet And His TV Set. I liked that poem because of how Jimmy turns into a TV. I also liked I Must Remember. I liked that poem because of all the stuff he said he had to remember and then he ate it all at the end and got really big. If I had rate this book from 1-5 I would rate it a 4.5.
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Fantastic Mr. Fox as an exiting and breathtaking book. I think it's an exciting book because there's nonstop action because there's no pausing points. It's breathtaking because it's nerve racking cause you don't want anything bad to happen to the characters so it gets you really tense and anxious. When things happen you don't expect it, like one minute the foxes are dying of hunger and the next minute there having a feast. The book makes you think it's over than a new idea comes up like you think the foxes will be dug up but they escape. The best part for me was when Mr.Fox found the chicken's, geese and ducks, and cider. I think Mr. Fox is persevering because he doesn't stop thinking and doing until his families safe. I think all three farmers are stubborn and greedy because they want to kill a fox, just a fox because he takes a few things when they have THOUSANDS. I recommend this book to people that like a good balance if action and drama.

Artemis Fowl
Artemis Fowl is a genius, as well as a world class criminal. When his father dies in an explosion Artemis works up a scheme that involves human and fairy kind alike. He steals a book that explains all the secrets of the underground lives of fairies. But these are not Tinker-Bell’s band of fairies, these fairies are part of an elite police call LEPrecan. When Artemis learns how to decipher the book, he kidnaps LEP’s first female officer, Captain Holly Short. Holly is taken back to Fowl Manor, where she is held captive by Artemis and his security team, brother and sister, Butler and Juliet, highly trained people who can take out an entire LEP set of officers in five minutes flat.
The whole point of Artemis’s plan is to secure gold from the fairies. He plans to get a large ransom for Holly, but LEP has a few unanticipated tricks up its sleeve. They completely stop the progression of time around Fowl Manor in order to get Captain Short back. But Artemis proves he can fight back. He has a conversation with Commander Root (the leader of LEP) to try and negotiate a ransom sent in. Artemis tells Root that he know how to get out of the time stoppage, something that was supposed to be impossible. Finally, LEP sends in the gold.
Holly is returned to LEP safe and sound. Holly is safe and back at LEP, but there is still the question of whether Artemis, Juliet, and Butler survived. But Artemis is a genius, nothing can get past him. He drugs the three of them with sleeping pills. They all fall into a very deep sleep, while LEP sends in a bomb to destroy Fowl Manor. Everyone in the house survives. So, Captain Holly Short is returned home and Fowl Manor stays where it is.
Wonder
Wonder is about a 5th grader who has some facial defects. He has a dog named Daisy and a sister named Via. His name is August. August has never been to school before. He has been homeschooled for the last six years. Finally, they make a plan for him to start school in the 5th grade at Beecher Prep. He took a tour of the school with two boys named Julian and Jack, and a girl named Charlotte who is a goody-two-shoes. But Julian is the worst! He is super mean to August. Jack is by far the best. He defended August from Julian.
After a few months, August starts school and he and Jack sit together for every period! He and Jack become really good friends. Julian has some friends too: Henry, Amos and Miles. It was lunch time. Via always warned him about cafeteria food so he brought a tuna sandwich. He had cleft palate surgery so it looked disgusting when he ate. Everybody was ignoring him when a girl named Summer came up to his table. August became friends with her as well.
Via has a boyfriend named Justin. Justin has sloppy handwriting, long bangs and thick glasses. Jack and August were working on the science fair project when they met him. Later what August always feared happened. He got hearing aids. But because his ears were tiny there was a band around his head that made him look like Lobot from Star Wars which he really liked.
Beecher Prep had a nature retreat for two nights and three days. Julian didn't come and he really liked it with ziplining and stuff. There were three other schools there. Jack had to pee so they went in the woods and when they came out three boys and two girls were shoving them and one took his super expensive hearing aids and smashed them. They started a movie on a screen, everything was black. The boys were 7th graders. Suddenly, Amos rammed the kid holding a flashlight up to August's face. Miles clocked another boy. Henry grabbed August and ran into a cornfield when they realized the hearing aids were gone. They made it back to their class and Principal Tushman asked where they were and they told him everything.
Afterwards, when they went home, Daisy died. Later, his dad brought home a box for August. He opened it and a black puppy was inside! They named him Bear. When August went back to school, he was famous because of the bullies. At graduation he won the Beecher Prep Henry Ward Beecher award.
I really enjoyed this book because it isn't like other books. It has everything! I enjoyed pages 158-185 because it was funny how some silly thing could lead to a major fight between friends.
Roald Dahl has written many fantastic books in his lifetime. One of his stupendous books
was The BFG. The Big Friendly Giant is an easygoing, lighthearted giant. He has a very
interesting job. He collects dreams from Dream Country, labels them, and gives them to people
in the human world. Sophie the other main character, accidentally meets the BFG while he is
giving out dreams. Since the BFG doesn't want Sophie to let out his secret, he takes her away
to Giant Country. The BFG feels sorry about taking Sophie, but when Sophie told him about her
difficult life in the orphanage, he begins to feel much better. That is the start of their incredible
friendship and wonderful adventure.
In Giant Country, there are nine other beastly, hairy giants. They are cold-hearted giants
who go to different countries every night to eat humans. The BFG is the only giant who believes
it is wrong to eat humans. Since he doesn't like what the other giants are doing, he wants to
stop them. Unfortunately, he has a big disadvantage. He is smaller and weaker than all the
other massive giants. Sophie also agrees that it is wrong to eat humans. Will a giant and a girl
work together to create a brilliant idea?
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is about the Buckets who are very poor. Mr. Willy Wonka sends out 5 golden tickets, it was surprising how Charlie got the last golden ticket. I liked how they shot through the roof and when they crashed the roof of the Buckets house. I was also surprised how all four of the kids did something wrong and it led to something bad happening to them. My favorite part was when Mr. Wonka handed Charlie the factory. I want to read Charlie and the Glass Elevator because Charlie and the Chocolate Factory because was so good.

I read A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket. It is a sad story because their mom and dad die in a fire. Then they stay with Count Olaf and he is mean to the 3 kids ones name is Klaus one Sunny and one Violet. Count Olaf slaps Klaus in the face. Then he traps Sunny the youngest in a bird cage hanging out a window. The only way he will let her go is if Violet pretends to marry him and she almost marries him. Count Olaf wants to marry her to get all her money because there mom and dad were rich. But then she writes her signature with her left hand when she is right handed then Justice Strauss she works for court and she’s on the kids side said that you need to use the hand you write with so they were free and Sunny was let down from the tower and Count Olaf was about to go to jail but then he turned off the lights and escaped. Then Justice Strauss was about to bring them home but Mr. Poe the person who was about to arrest Count Olaf said they must be related to a family member. So they’re staying with Mr. Poe and he’s looking for a new home for them.
I liked it and I recommend it to other kids.

I read A Series of Unfortunate Events The Reptile Room by Lemony Snicket . Its about 3 kids whos parents die in a fire. They now are living with there uncle Monty he loves Reptiles. He has a assistant who retires. They like there uncle he gets a new assistant Stephano who is really Count Olaf he just he shaved off his eye brow and hair .There uncle went shopping because there going to Peru. As soon as there uncle leaves he threatens them with a knife. Then there uncle comes back they complain to him they eat dinner and go to the movies then they go to bed. That night Count Olaf kills uncle Monty. The next morning Count Olaf said that there uncle was dead then he takes them to the airport but they crash into Mr. Poe and went back to the house. Then they got a professor and he said it was a snack bight but it wasn’t they found proof because there uncle said that he took all the poison out and put them in tubes poked holes to look like a snack bight then the professor pretended to arrest him. Then Sunny bit the professor it was the hooked man. Then they escaped.
I liked that a lot of exciting stuff happened in this book. I felt like it was interesting. I would recommend it to the class.

The BFG
I read The BFG by Roald Dahl . It’s about an orphan who helps the BFG . The BFG is a good giant . The orphan helps the BFG to stop bad giants from eating people. First the BFG steels the orphan named Sophie from an orphanage . Then he brings her to giant country Sophie thinks the BFG is going to eat her but he doesn’t he just said that she was going to all her friends then there was going to be a giant hunt. The only thing that he eats is snozzlecumbers both of them think its disgusting then they catch dreams the BFG finds a really good one , and Sophie caught a really bad one .Then they used the really bad one on the one giant there are 9 giants .Then they made a plan to make the queen a nightmare so they got to the palace then she shows her the BFG then they have breakfast . Then they captured the giants and put them in a hole.
