What is the probability that we will get doubles using dice?
What is the probability that...? This is the question Thunder and Lightning students are researching in math with cards, coins, colored chips, and dice. One group had an interesting die that has a mini die inside a clear die. The students in this group was rolling for doubles. They rolled the die 10 times and got doubles twice.
When it came time to share the probability of getting doubles when rolling two dice, students had more than one answer. One threw out that it was 2/10 because 10 rolls and two doubles. Another stated there are 6 faces on each die which means there are 12 faces all together, therefore 2 doubles out of 12 faces. Then another person thought it was six faces times six faces making an outcome possibility of 36, so the probability was 2/36.
We found we were confused so we asked Mr. Lawrence to help us. With our help Mr. Lawrence created a chart of possible outcomes. Through this chart we observed that there are 6 ways to roll doubles out of the possible outcomes which is 6/36 or 1/6. We were thankful for Mr. Lawrence's help and he left us with a challenge. What is the possibility of rolling two dice whose faces equal 10? Students are emailing Mr. Lawrence with their answers.
