Engineering is Elementary Program

Hello Parents,


Jen Paffenroth (Forests teacher) and Melissa McCallihan (Thunder and Lightning teacher) will be teaching a week long engineering camp the week of August 8 at Mustard Seed School.


We will be doing an Engineering is Elementary program from the Museum of Science, Boston. You may want to check out the blog from this past summer's To the Rescue aid drop engineering camp. We will be choosing a new engineering program this coming summer.


There will be 2 sessions.


Session 1:
  • for rising 3rd and 4th grade students
  • 9:00am - 11:30am
Session 2:
  • for rising 5th and 6th grade students
  • 12:30-3:00


There will be a class size maximum of 20 students for each session. The total cost is $175, which includes a $25 materials fee and a $25 admissions fee. If you are interested, please respond to this email and when confirmed, drop off the $50 to MSS. You can bring cash or a check made out to Mustard Seed School. This nonrefundable $50 fee will hold your spot. The rest of the cost will be due the week of the camp.  The spots are taken on a first come, first serve basis. (If the cost is prohibiting your child from participating please let us know.)

Students studied the rules for possessive nouns.  The placement of that little apostrophe changes everything! Students created cartoons that demonstrate the difference between singular and plural possessives. Here are a couple things we noticed about their work: The students' drawings are creative. Each student's idea is unique. Students have been completing projects in math. Fourth grade students are ordering fractions on a number line.   The fifth graders are working hard, too. Fifth graders are learning good note taking skills and are using that skill to inform their understand of reciprocals and the inverse property. All of this is part of their study of fraction multiplication and division. Students went to free cone day!

More than One Way to Solve a Problem

Have you ever used the Egyptian method for large digit multiplication? How about the Mayan? Did you know there were different algorithms and methods for solving these types of problems? Fifth grade math students did some research and created displays on algorithms from around the world. Students have been refining and improving their accuracy and efficiency with the United States standard algorithm   During our course of study, the Investigations curriculum asks the students to use at least two ways to solve multi digit multiplication problems. Many have relied on the box method. Because of this study of world algorithms, we have seen the students pick up more strategies to bring to their mathematical problem solving.
