Reading Responses

Starting this week, students will be responsible for writing reading responses each Friday.  Generally, students will write about the book they are reading that week.  The formats of this writing will vary throughout the year and will be posted in the room for student reference.  Responses are due at 10:30am every Friday.  

For most students, the responses can be written in school.  Students will have 45 minutes of writing time each Friday in school before the response is due.  So for most students, the response is not part of the weekly homework assignments.  If, however, a student realizes that 45 minutes is not enough time, s/he may start the response on Thursday at home.

This week, students will be writing a shorter response than usual as they become familiar with the assignment requirements.

This week all students will write 2 paragraphs about the book they are reading.  Each paragraph will tell about one character and one of their traits.  Students will provide three examples from the text that support the given trait.

Tale of Despereaux
Despereaux is the noblest mouse you’ll ever meet.  He doesn’t renounce his sins of talking to a human and letting a human touch him.  He acts like a knight by going to the dungeon and being brave for the princess.  He doesn’t give up to save the one he loves, Princess Pea.  Those are all of my reasons why Despereaux is noble.  I hope they convinced you.

Students studied the rules for possessive nouns.  The placement of that little apostrophe changes everything! Students created cartoons that demonstrate the difference between singular and plural possessives. Here are a couple things we noticed about their work: The students' drawings are creative. Each student's idea is unique. Students have been completing projects in math. Fourth grade students are ordering fractions on a number line.   The fifth graders are working hard, too. Fifth graders are learning good note taking skills and are using that skill to inform their understand of reciprocals and the inverse property. All of this is part of their study of fraction multiplication and division. Students went to free cone day!

More than One Way to Solve a Problem

Have you ever used the Egyptian method for large digit multiplication? How about the Mayan? Did you know there were different algorithms and methods for solving these types of problems? Fifth grade math students did some research and created displays on algorithms from around the world. Students have been refining and improving their accuracy and efficiency with the United States standard algorithm   During our course of study, the Investigations curriculum asks the students to use at least two ways to solve multi digit multiplication problems. Many have relied on the box method. Because of this study of world algorithms, we have seen the students pick up more strategies to bring to their mathematical problem solving.
