Invitation to Open Rehearsal

Dear Mustard Seed Families,
I am writing to invite all students in 5th grade and up to come and try out to join the PROS!  Please read the note below carefully.  I know many of you are planning your after school activities and here is one of the great opportunity to have fun and serve the community at the same time.  More information on other after school activities will soon be communicated.  If you have any questions about PROS, please email Mrs. Mauldin.  Looking forward to seeing many of you at the Open Rehearsal on Monday!

THE PROS OPEN REHEARSAL – Monday September 12   3:15-4:30
If you want to check out what a typical PROS rehearsals would look like, come to the open rehearsal on Monday 9th (this coming Monday!) after school!  We will go over the audition materials and requirements, discuss performance opportunities, get to know the director and try out some instruments.  The audition materials will be available to take home for all students that participate in Open Rehearsal.  If you cannot attend the Open Rehearsal, you may come and see Mrs. Mauldin throughout the week to pick up the audition materials.  Those who are attending open rehearsal this Monday must have a note or email from parents to the homeroom teacher.  Dismissal will be at 4:30 outside the blue door.

THE PROS AUDITION – Monday September 19, 3:15 – 4:30
Students interested in joining the PROS this year must audition on this day.  The audition materials will be available in the Music Room from Monday September 9, after school. This year all students interested in participating must try out in all 3 instruments – recorder (of choice: soprano, alto, tenor or bass), percussion (conga, bongo, or other hand held percussions) and orff (xylophone, metalophone or glockenspiel).  The audition is open to all students in 5th grade and up.
PROS meet on Mondays from 3:15 – 4:30 for rehearsals.

Why PROS???
Do you like to play recorders?  Do you like to get together in a small group and make music?  Do you like to lead music in worship, concerts and other occasions?  Are you the one to go the extra mile?  Or the one to have the fire within you and want to spread it?? Then come and join the PROS!  This year, there are already some big events planned for the PROS – not only the school concerts (Las Posadas & Spring Concert), daily worship and school celebrations, we have been engaged to play in the following events:  Collaborating with the Drama Club Performances, Hoboken Choral Festival featuring the American Boychoir Training Choir, Hoboken Day Of Inspiration Concert, Empty Bowls, and more.  There are many professionals that will be coming in to work with the members – Carnegie Hall Teaching Artist, Professional World Drummers and more.  See Mrs. Mauldin with any questions.  This is going to be a big year for PROS – you do not want to miss it!!  There are at most 12 spots for PROS.  If you are a returning member, you would still have to audition :)
PROS yearly participation fee is $120.

Students studied the rules for possessive nouns.  The placement of that little apostrophe changes everything! Students created cartoons that demonstrate the difference between singular and plural possessives. Here are a couple things we noticed about their work: The students' drawings are creative. Each student's idea is unique. Students have been completing projects in math. Fourth grade students are ordering fractions on a number line.   The fifth graders are working hard, too. Fifth graders are learning good note taking skills and are using that skill to inform their understand of reciprocals and the inverse property. All of this is part of their study of fraction multiplication and division. Students went to free cone day!

More than One Way to Solve a Problem

Have you ever used the Egyptian method for large digit multiplication? How about the Mayan? Did you know there were different algorithms and methods for solving these types of problems? Fifth grade math students did some research and created displays on algorithms from around the world. Students have been refining and improving their accuracy and efficiency with the United States standard algorithm   During our course of study, the Investigations curriculum asks the students to use at least two ways to solve multi digit multiplication problems. Many have relied on the box method. Because of this study of world algorithms, we have seen the students pick up more strategies to bring to their mathematical problem solving.
