Summer Reading
Where's your favorite place to read? Mine is while I'm waiting anywhere...for the bus, on the bus, on the PATH, or for a appointment. Here are a few more summaries.
The Mysterious Benedict Society
The title of this book is, “The Mysterious Benedict Society.” It is about four exceptional children who get accepted into a group that goes on adventures and dangerous missions. They test their limits through teamwork and defeat the evil leader of nomansland island, Mr. Curtain. In their adventures they come across a lot of different things including Nomansland island, a peculiar woman named number 2 (who slightly reminded the children of a pencil) and a mysterious contraption called “The Whisperer”.
The reason that the children are going on this adventure is to stop Mr. Curtain from using “The Whisperer.” Mr. Curtain’s plan is to take over the world with his contraption. You’re probably wondering what “The Whisperer” does exactly. Well, it is a brainwashing device that soothes your fears and if you go in it too many times, it tricks you into thinking that Mr. Curtain is the master. It is a metal chair and on the front there is a blue helmet and on the back a red one. You sit on it and clamps attach to your wrists, the helmet lowers and the session starts.
Mr Curtain has a twin brother named Mr Benedict which the society is named after. Mr. Benedict helps save all the children by going into the red helmet and tricking The Whisperer that he is Mr Curtain. He thinks about shutting The Whisperer down and it does. I enjoyed this book because it has adventure and mystery. As they come across many weird and scary things the Mysterious Benedict Society learns that the most important thing is friendship.

The mouse in shining armor
“I honor you” are the words that Desperaux spoke to the princess as he scurried away to the mouse hole. One of Desperaux’s traits is bravery. First of all he is a mouse and he dares to go by humans, especially the king. For example, when he heard the king playing music he went straight to him without even thinking about the consequences. Also he went down to the dungeon where rats live, but he did it to save the princess. Lastly he showed bravery when he whispered in pea’s ear what the knight had said in the book, “I honor you”.I think that Desperaux is brave because he doesn't care if he doesn’t fit in, or if he is too small He cares about what is on the inside. I would recommend this book 100% because it shows that even if you are little you can do big things also bravery is a big theme in Desperaux.
I liked this book because it got me thinking about freckles. I also enjoyed it because it made me laugh. Freckle Juice made me feel annoyed and sad when Sharon was being so mean to Andrew. I would recommend this book to my friends, because it was funny and interesting. I would not recommend this book to people who hate freckles, because this book is mainly about freckles. If you want to get freckles, you should definitely read Freckle Juice!
THE TALE OF DESPEREAUX
Despereaux Tilling had been called many different things, for instance
-big eared
-strange
-small.
He was born with his eyes open, looking at the light.
One day while Desperreaux’s older sister was teaching him how to eat the glue that binds books in the castle they live in.(Oh yeah they’re mice.) Despereaux, instead of eating the book, he read it. The little mouse said 4 words over and over again. These words were Once Upon a Time. On that day he meets the Princess Pea.
This book has 4 different parts(books if you will). The first book is all about Despereaux Tilling the little mouse. The second book is about a rat named Chiaroscuro who was born in the dungeon, but one day he escapes up into the castle and accidentally kills Queen Rosemary. This makes him have a thirst for revenge. The third book is about a girl named Miggery Sow(a.k.a. Mig.) She was sold to a man who made Mig his servant and every time she did something wrong she would get whacked in the ear with a frying pan. So by the time of her 12th birthday she was basically deaf.
The last book is about how all these characters meet.
A lot of people who I’ve talked to have said that they loved this book, I disagree.I didn’t love this book but it was not my least favorite book but I didn’t love it.

Nancy Drew and the Mystery of the Old Clock
You’ve probably heard Nancy Drew, hero of the town of River Heights, daughter of the lawyer Carson Drew, and the girl who found Josiah Crowley’s will making the pompous and obnoxious Topham family to go bankrupt.
Nancy Drew had been driving down the road in her new car when a little girl ran through her path and almost fell in the river. This little girl’s name was Judy. she lived with her great aunts Mary and Edna Turner. The two old ladies had been promised money buy there cousin Josiah Crowley, who owned a pretty large fortune. But Josiah Crowley had written many wills because he had promised lots of friends and family part of his fortune, sadly the only will that came to light left everything to all ready very wealthy Topham family.
A few days later Nancy met Grace and Allison Hoover who also had been promised something in Josiah’s will. So now Nancy Drew is on the case and is determined.
I don’t want to spoil the ending so it is up to you to read this book find out if a will is found!
"The Tale of Desperaux" is a fantastic tale of Desperaux, a perseverant mouse, who goes on an adventure to save the beautiful princess Pea. Even though he was born smaller than he should have been, with big ears and open eyes, each
unusual thing gave him a gift. His smallness gave him a big heart, his eyes let him see the world and explore it, which let him read the words "Once upon a time" and the book that he found at the royal library. There, those words he saw with his eyes opened his heart a bit more, giving him the spirit of the knight in the story he read. And last but not least, his big ears helped him hear the music, which he thought sounded like honey. The music was being played by the king to his daughter, the princess Pea. The little mouse followed the music, and there the princess saw him, and Desperaux fell in love with the princess so his ears led him to the place were it all began. Even though I read this book 2 times already, I still love the book The Tale of Desperaux.
Liar and Spy is a story of how two boys become friends, and how they make a Spy club. First, there's Georges (the s is silent), and when he moves into the apartment that Safer (his new friend) lives in, lots of things change.
George just moved, and along with his mother being in the hospital, things are definitely not normal... Then, Georges and his dad find an old piece of paper taped onto a door that says 'Spy club meeting today!' so Georges' dad goes ahead and signs Georges up by writing 'WHAT TIME?' in big block letters.
Georges goes at 3:00 pm, the answered time. There he meets Safer and Candy, two siblings. Safer explains that their quest is to find out more about Mr. X, the guy who wears all black, never speaks, and carries black, heavy suitcases in and out of the apartment building all day. Safer has Georges doing crazy things, like sticking gum wrappers in between Mr. X's door and doorframe. Safer even breaks into Mr. X's house once or twice. But one day, Safer decides to reveal the truth about the whole spy thing..

If you like freckles, than you should read Freckle Juice. The author of this book is Judy Blume. You might know her because she wrote a lot of interesting children’s books. The calming illustrations were created by Sonia O. Lisker. This stupendous book is a work of fiction. Freckle Juice can be categorized as realistic fiction because the plot of the book could have happened in real life. I chose this book because it was recommended by a friend.
Freckle Juice takes place in a small neighborhood. Most of the book takes place in a school. The other setting in the book is Andrew’s house. Both of these locations are realistic. The school is very strict and the students feel nervous about getting into trouble. Andrew’s house is a calm and peaceful place. I think Judy Blume chose these settings because she may have had strict teachers when she was in school. She may have also lived in a calming home. I think that both of these settings were good choices for the book.
Andrew and Sharon are the main characters in this book. Sharon is a sneaky girl who tries to get people into trouble in school. Andrew is a nice boy that doesn’t deserve to get into trouble. They are both ten years old. Andrew is my favorite character because he is calm and he goes with the flow. I can relate to Andrew because he wants freckles really badly, and I have felt that way before about other things.
Freckle Juice taught me not to lie to people. At the beginning of the book Andrew wants to get freckles, but he doesn’t know how to. Sharon gets Andrew in trouble by passing Andrew a note during class. Later on, Sharon tells Andrew that she has a recipe for freckle juice. She gives the recipe to Andrew and he goes home and tries to make the juice. Unfortunately, Andrew doesn’t have all of the ingredients and the juice doesn’t give him freckles.

Will Artemis and his team (if you could call it that) win or will the LEPrecon team win? It’s a fight to the finish, a battle to the death, the only one who leaves is the last one left. I’d say this book gets a five star rating because of all the intriguing moments and the parts where you can’t put it down! I hope you read this book because for me it was a little hard to get into at first but then I couldn’t put it down, I’d read it even if I didn’t have to!
