Thunder and Lightning Happenings

Can you believe there is just three weeks left to this school year? Yet we are going strong and working to finish well in the Thunder and Lightning class. Just today the students are beginning a Tall Tale unit and learning how to work into their writing literary devices such as hyperbole, onomatopoeia, simile and metaphor. In math we are continuing our geometry study with three-dimensional figures. On Tuesday the students added vertex, edge and face to their shape description vocabulary, and also determined what makes a shape a prism and what makes a shape a pyramid. Soon they will be calculating the volume of shapes.

Additionally there are some events parents are welcome to attend--
  • Historical Fiction picture book sharing event Tuesday, June 7, 9:30-10:15 (Look for an invitation and food sign up sheet coming very soon.)
  • DIY STEAM sharing, Wednesday, June 15, 1:25-2:15
  • Chorister Open Class, Friday, June 17, 12:20-1:00 in the Community Room
  • Two exciting prayer and praise Worship celebrations:
    • one with ukulele music Friday, June 10, 2:30-2:55, in the Community Room,
    • and another where everyone will contribute with percussion instruments Friday, June 17, 2:30-2:55, in the gym.

Students studied the rules for possessive nouns.  The placement of that little apostrophe changes everything! Students created cartoons that demonstrate the difference between singular and plural possessives. Here are a couple things we noticed about their work: The students' drawings are creative. Each student's idea is unique. Students have been completing projects in math. Fourth grade students are ordering fractions on a number line.   The fifth graders are working hard, too. Fifth graders are learning good note taking skills and are using that skill to inform their understand of reciprocals and the inverse property. All of this is part of their study of fraction multiplication and division. Students went to free cone day!

More than One Way to Solve a Problem

Have you ever used the Egyptian method for large digit multiplication? How about the Mayan? Did you know there were different algorithms and methods for solving these types of problems? Fifth grade math students did some research and created displays on algorithms from around the world. Students have been refining and improving their accuracy and efficiency with the United States standard algorithm   During our course of study, the Investigations curriculum asks the students to use at least two ways to solve multi digit multiplication problems. Many have relied on the box method. Because of this study of world algorithms, we have seen the students pick up more strategies to bring to their mathematical problem solving.
