All are Invited to the Open Choristers Class Friday

What a busy year we had!  We started the month of May by rehearsing intensely for the upcoming Spring Concert/Carnegie Hall trip.  We participated the Carnegie Hall Link Up! Orchestra Rocks! Concert to celebrate our learning in recorder performance throughout the year.  We listened to St. Luke's Orchestra conducted by Rossen Milanov, as well as a professional balalaika performer, a virtuoso electric violin player, and a percussion ensemble.  We were able to sing The Birch Tree and play O Fortuna on recorders with the orchestra.  

Then we had a long week of rehearsing and preparing for the Upper School Spring Concert, "How Can I Keep From Singing?"  Students worked very hard, and prepared both recorder pieces as well as demanding choral sets. I hope you were able to hear our beautiful sound, see how we rocked our movement, as well as experience the joy that came from collaborative music making.  I was so excited to be part of their performances.

Immediately after Spring Concert, we launched into our final project, which was to record some of our favorite pieces for Ms. Hanson, who is leaving MSS at the end of this school year.  We recorded several songs, both old and new!

Thank you for all your support in encouraging your child to make beautiful music together.  May be you heard some pretty (and not quite pretty yet) recorder sounds at home.  May be you heard them practicing a Spanish verse, guitar chords or drumming pattern for our special songs.  Or you might have had a child that couldn't stop humming our calypso song.

We will continue working until the last day of our time!  This Friday, June 17th (the last full day of school) we will have our annual Open Choristers class in the gym.  That day during our regular Choristers time (12:20 - 1:00) we will perform all of our repertoires (well, as many as we can fit in the time slot!).  All are invited.  Please come as you are able, feel free to walk in and stay for a song.  Or the whole time.  We would love to share our learnings with you.

Students studied the rules for possessive nouns.  The placement of that little apostrophe changes everything! Students created cartoons that demonstrate the difference between singular and plural possessives. Here are a couple things we noticed about their work: The students' drawings are creative. Each student's idea is unique. Students have been completing projects in math. Fourth grade students are ordering fractions on a number line.   The fifth graders are working hard, too. Fifth graders are learning good note taking skills and are using that skill to inform their understand of reciprocals and the inverse property. All of this is part of their study of fraction multiplication and division. Students went to free cone day!

More than One Way to Solve a Problem

Have you ever used the Egyptian method for large digit multiplication? How about the Mayan? Did you know there were different algorithms and methods for solving these types of problems? Fifth grade math students did some research and created displays on algorithms from around the world. Students have been refining and improving their accuracy and efficiency with the United States standard algorithm   During our course of study, the Investigations curriculum asks the students to use at least two ways to solve multi digit multiplication problems. Many have relied on the box method. Because of this study of world algorithms, we have seen the students pick up more strategies to bring to their mathematical problem solving.
