Multi-Grade Geometry

We are studying geometry in math. Four days of the week, we study geometry in multi-grade groups. We work to take notes on the attributes of different shapes and angles. Then we work to apply and extend our understanding through practice work measuring, drawing, and discussing.

The conversations we hear sound like this: "First Josh thought that it was less than 90 degrees, like 85 but then we looked at the angle and realized it was an obtuse angle and there's no way it could be 85 degrees so it's actually 105." Laura

One fifth grader commented, "This is hard!"

Students extended their study of geometry during word study. They are thinking about comparing and contrasting attributes of triangles and quadrilaterals. Students are challenged to use the following terms in their discussions: obtuse, acute, equilateral, isosceles, scalene, rhombus, parallelogram.

We are thinking about questions like these:

  • Are all squares rectangles?
  • Are all rectangles squares?
  • What are supplementary angles?
  • What are complimentary angles?
  • Are complimentary angles and supplementary angles related? If so, how?
  • How do we use protractors to accurately measure angles?
