Terra Nova Tests Next Week
Terra Nova testing is scheduled for next week, starting Monday, February 25. So that we might begin and end well, here are a few things to keep in mind.
Don't worry, but take it seriously:
While it is important not to pressure students at all about testing and while standardized testing is only one measure of school achievement, it goes without saying that it is important to take these days seriously. How? Well, very seriously, students who do best on these tests are students who arrive at school well rested, with a solid breakfast, and with enough time to settle in before the testing begins.
Sustain energy till the very end.
You see, depending on the grade, there are about 9 tests that will take place this week. In most cases, a test is completed in a 30 to 40 minute sitting and, in the case of math and reading, the test is as long as 55 minutes each. That is hard and long work. Stamina and attention are the qualities that serve children most effectively when facing this kind of challenge. Students who are tired, hungry, or hurried are the students who will struggle most, make more mistakes, and perform below their potential.
Face uncertainty well.
Still further, it is very important that students feel strong and encouraged. In the case of standardized tests, unlike other kinds of tests, a student will face a number of questions for which he will not know the answer. That is deliberate. That is just how standardized tests work. However, the awareness of mistakes should not trick a child into thinking that she has performed badly. In truth, students who are aware of their mistakes often make fewer mistakes and so score better than those who are unaware. Still more, students who can face the uncertainty with energy and courage, will be the ones who do their finest. In other words, this will be a week to encourage your child, particularly when, by Thursday morning, she feels a bit drained.
Be well rested, well nourished, and on time.
Finally, it is important to note that if a child arrives late to school - after a test has begun, he or she will have to make up the test in a make up session. (We are not permitted to allow students to start late.) Similarly, if a child is ill and misses school, the missed tests will be offered in a make up session. The make up sessions will take place only after school, 3:30 - 4:30 on Thursday, Friday, Monday, and Tuesday.

A few years ago the fourth and eighth grades originated a new way to enjoy the Terra Nova week by instituting a spirit week. Each day of the week after midwinter break, students dress in certain colors or items to show their spirit, and bring a sense of unity as we take on the challenge of the Terra Nova tests. Announcement of the days' themes will be coming soon.
