For the first half of the year, our literacy instruction has had a heavy emphasis on reading. Among other things, students have learned:
For the first half of the year, our literacy instruction has had a heavy emphasis on reading. Among other things, students have learned:
- Independent reading habits
- How to write about their reading
- How to participate in book clubs
Now, as we grow student independence, we expect these habits to be maintained as we move into a time of emphasis on writing.
Students are still expected to:
- Read for 30 minutes at home each night
- They will often have an assigned Book Club book that must be read at home.
- Submit a written or typed Reading Response every Friday (Here is the new format and expectations for the responses).
Writing
In STEAM, students have learned a lot about the Civil War. They will use this knowledge to write a historical fiction picture book that takes place during that time. This will be a long project with main goals of writing deeply about setting and learning to use multiple drafts to create the best work possible.
Students will be working in groups of 10-11 for the duration of this writing project.
Word Study
Students will learn words that establish mood. They will use them in their historical fiction writing.
