Mini Term

Advent and Mini Term are upon us. This is a time of joy and of waiting, and of many changes to our schedule and routine.

Homework
Students still have homework, but they will not do SpellWell during Mini Term. Homework will include vocabulary, reading for 30 minutes, and math.

Lunch
Students have lunch at 12:00 instead of our normal 11:00 lunch time. This change in eating schedule is making many students feel hungrier than normal. Please pack them some extra snacks. Remember, the fourth floor is nut free.

PE
There is no PE during Mini Term. PE will resume in January.

Literacy
Students are learning about poetry and practicing paragraph writing. Many students are researching and writing about a poet while learning to write in his or her style. Other students are writing descriptive paragraphs.

Students will share what they learned about their poet on Thursday, December 17th. We will let you know at what time this will take place.

Math/STEAM
Students are learning about scale, perimeter, and area in math. They are using these skills to create a blueprint for a purposeful playground in STEAM.

They will share their presentations on Wednesday, December 16th at 1:20pm.

Students studied the rules for possessive nouns.  The placement of that little apostrophe changes everything! Students created cartoons that demonstrate the difference between singular and plural possessives. Here are a couple things we noticed about their work: The students' drawings are creative. Each student's idea is unique. Students have been completing projects in math. Fourth grade students are ordering fractions on a number line.   The fifth graders are working hard, too. Fifth graders are learning good note taking skills and are using that skill to inform their understand of reciprocals and the inverse property. All of this is part of their study of fraction multiplication and division. Students went to free cone day!

More than One Way to Solve a Problem

Have you ever used the Egyptian method for large digit multiplication? How about the Mayan? Did you know there were different algorithms and methods for solving these types of problems? Fifth grade math students did some research and created displays on algorithms from around the world. Students have been refining and improving their accuracy and efficiency with the United States standard algorithm   During our course of study, the Investigations curriculum asks the students to use at least two ways to solve multi digit multiplication problems. Many have relied on the box method. Because of this study of world algorithms, we have seen the students pick up more strategies to bring to their mathematical problem solving.
