Merry Match Junior (MMJr)
In response to the heartfelt giving by Mustard Seed students during last year’s Merry Match Junior, the Board of Trustees is generously issuing a matching challenge to students again this year! This will happen during the Merry Match on Dec. 8, 9, & 10th. This challenge is called Merry Match Junior.
This year’s theme again centers around the merry adventures of Flat Postema. (Think Flat Stanley). It should be fun and we hope that you and your class will get caught up in the spirit of joy that surrounds this important campaign.
Here’s how it works:
For 3 days only – Dec. 8, 9, & 10th, students in grades K-8 (not Nest) are encouraged to contribute money that they have earned or saved to their class Merry Match Jr. collection. Merry Match Jr. collection baskets will be delivered to classrooms on Friday, Dec. 4. The baskets will contain money envelopes for teachers to give to students on Monday at the end of the day. Also included will be stickers for students to wear home on Monday.
At the end of the Merry Match Jr., the sum of the class collection will be matched using the Merry Match guidelines. That is, a class gift of $1-$99 will be matched with $100. Class gifts over $100 will be matched dollar for dollar. In addition, classes with 100% class participation will receive a bonus match of $100. The emphasis of Merry Match Junior is on participation and not amount given. No amount is too small. The point is that we all come together to help our community. Nurture the Joy of Giving
Service projects at Mustard Seed are a way to develop a habit and to learn the joy of giving. Here’s how you can nurture the joy of giving in your child through the Merry Match Jr.:
Help your children find ways to earn money by completing chores, helping around the house, or completing a task that would nurture their growth.
Find ways to connect giving to gratitude. For example, when you set the table, add a few coins to each person’s place. Set out a container for the coins on the table. Have each person speak about something for which they are grateful and place a coin in the container for each thing. True joy in giving comes when we realize all that we have been given. A small practice such as this can help remind us of that in a tangible way.
Ask your child if they have any ideas about how they would like to participate. Last year, some students spontaneously chose to give from their personal savings.
Each gift, no matter the size, is important. We hope that the Merry Match Jr. will show students that their participation makes a difference, too.
