Las Posadas

Las Posadas is upon us again.  The celebration will work a bit differently this year than in previous years.  Please read the schedule below:

  • 6:15 Arrival time at the gazebo in Church Square Park
  • 6:30-7:00  Procession around park
  • 7:00-7:30  Concert in the MSS gym
  • 7:30  Children say goodbye to their teachers and go home.  Bags of candy will be given to the students on their way out.  There is no post-concert party.

Las Posadas Questions and Answers for Parents


What time should we be at the park?
Parents and children (K-5) should gather around the gazebo by 6:30 PM, when the procession begins.  Chorus and Service Team Members (Grades 6-8) arrive by 6:15. (Teachers arrive before students arrive.)
Does everyone need to dress up?
All students should come as a shepherd, angel, sheep or Bethlehem villager.  Parents are encouraged to dress up also – throw a towel over your head or drape a blanket over your coat, and bathrobes, of course, are always in style on this night.
Where do we get a light?
Students will receive a light from their teacher.  Parents and siblings can get lights near the stairs to the gazebo.
How many times will we sing that song we always sing?
We will sing it many times and we want your voice too.  Sheet music is available to all parents when you pick up your lights.  When we walk from place to place we don’t all sing, but when we stop in front of the doorway we will all sing the song about three times before Joseph knocks on the door.  
Where should parents be in the procession?

During the procession students will walk with their classmates.  You and any younger siblings are welcome to join them.  We encourage you to help the teachers keep all the children together as a class.  We are a big group so try to pack in close when we stop so that our procession is not strung far off down the street.  Some classes will stop ahead of the main star and will need to turn around to see Mary and Joseph.

Students studied the rules for possessive nouns.  The placement of that little apostrophe changes everything! Students created cartoons that demonstrate the difference between singular and plural possessives. Here are a couple things we noticed about their work: The students' drawings are creative. Each student's idea is unique. Students have been completing projects in math. Fourth grade students are ordering fractions on a number line.   The fifth graders are working hard, too. Fifth graders are learning good note taking skills and are using that skill to inform their understand of reciprocals and the inverse property. All of this is part of their study of fraction multiplication and division. Students went to free cone day!

More than One Way to Solve a Problem

Have you ever used the Egyptian method for large digit multiplication? How about the Mayan? Did you know there were different algorithms and methods for solving these types of problems? Fifth grade math students did some research and created displays on algorithms from around the world. Students have been refining and improving their accuracy and efficiency with the United States standard algorithm   During our course of study, the Investigations curriculum asks the students to use at least two ways to solve multi digit multiplication problems. Many have relied on the box method. Because of this study of world algorithms, we have seen the students pick up more strategies to bring to their mathematical problem solving.
