Book Clubs

Introduction
So far this year, students have been learning how to choose appropriate books while learning reading habits such as pacing and keeping notes while reading.  Now, students will participate in teacher-led book clubs to practice and deepen these habits.  We will be reading animal stories to help inspire our simultaneous animal-story writing unit.

Purpose
The purpose of this book club is to practice the reading habits we have learned so far this year in a highly structured environment.  Another goal of this book club is to help students deeply examine characters.  These teacher-led book clubs will provide students with opportunities to learn and grow regardless of the subject or reading level of the assigned book. 

Logistics
Your child will be reading two of the following books between now and Thanksgiving break.  They will read one for one week and the other for a week and a half.  They will have time to read in school.  Some students might finish the allotted reading during this time, others will need to take the book home to finish.  If your child finishes his/her assigned reading in school, he/she may read a book of his/her choice at home each night. 
Your child's weekly reading response will be written about the assigned book club book.

Students studied the rules for possessive nouns.  The placement of that little apostrophe changes everything! Students created cartoons that demonstrate the difference between singular and plural possessives. Here are a couple things we noticed about their work: The students' drawings are creative. Each student's idea is unique. Students have been completing projects in math. Fourth grade students are ordering fractions on a number line.   The fifth graders are working hard, too. Fifth graders are learning good note taking skills and are using that skill to inform their understand of reciprocals and the inverse property. All of this is part of their study of fraction multiplication and division. Students went to free cone day!

More than One Way to Solve a Problem

Have you ever used the Egyptian method for large digit multiplication? How about the Mayan? Did you know there were different algorithms and methods for solving these types of problems? Fifth grade math students did some research and created displays on algorithms from around the world. Students have been refining and improving their accuracy and efficiency with the United States standard algorithm   During our course of study, the Investigations curriculum asks the students to use at least two ways to solve multi digit multiplication problems. Many have relied on the box method. Because of this study of world algorithms, we have seen the students pick up more strategies to bring to their mathematical problem solving.
