Nut Free

Dear Parent,

This letter is to inform you that there are several students throughout Grades 2 to 8, who have severe food allergies to peanuts and/or nuts. As the parent handbook indicates, we do take necessary actions to protect and care well for one another when such needs arise.

In this case, an exposure to peanuts/nuts may necessitate, for several students, emergency medical treatment. To reduce the chance of this occurring, we are asking that you refrain from send any peanut or nut containing products to school with your child. Examples of products that would stay home would include:
  • bags of nuts
  • peanut butter
  • granola bars with nuts
  • cakes, breads, or cookies containing nuts
That is, we are intending to create entirely nut free classrooms for Grades 2 through 8. All these grades are affected largely because of the number of children with allergies, but also because we have so many shared spaces at school.

At the same time, in order to keep things safe for everyone, we will become even more exceptionally diligent hand-washers at school. We will wash hands often, as well as tables, keyboards, and other shared items - just in case. If your child eats any nut-containing products at home for breakfast, be sure to remind your child to wash his or her hands well before leaving for school. Frequent hand-washing will not only protect classmates from allergens, but may very well keep us all safe from the flu and other germs as well.

We deeply appreciate your care and attention to this and for your care in keeping all peanuts, tree nuts, and nut containing products at home. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Peace,
Kathy
