Camp Bernie Overnighter

We are so excited to announce the opportunity for our Thunder and Lightning students to enjoy a new overnight experience at Camp Bernie, a YMCA camp in Port Murray, NJ. Camp counselors will guide us through low ropes course collaborative experiences, as well as environmental science learning. This is a first time experience for us all, and we are so looking forward to what this new camp relationship will bring to us as a community!

The details:

  • Dates: Thursday/Friday Sept. 24/25
  • Departure: 8:30 a.m. Thursday morning
  • Arrival: 3:00 p.m. Friday afternoon (barring any traffic)
  • Travel will be by bus there and back. 


Keep an eye out for:

  • A packing list handout and a release form from the camp. The latter needs to be signed and returned by Friday, Sept. 18. This was handed out at the Welcome Back Night. We are sending one home with the students on Thursday, Sept. 10.
  • A Google form for acknowledgement that we are going on this trip has been emailed, and is to be completed by Friday, Sept. 18.
  • A Google form for student health and a medical release to be completed by Friday, Sept. 18.
Needs:
We need three more gentlemen and at least one more woman to volunteer to be chaperones.

Students studied the rules for possessive nouns.  The placement of that little apostrophe changes everything! Students created cartoons that demonstrate the difference between singular and plural possessives. Here are a couple things we noticed about their work: The students' drawings are creative. Each student's idea is unique. Students have been completing projects in math. Fourth grade students are ordering fractions on a number line.   The fifth graders are working hard, too. Fifth graders are learning good note taking skills and are using that skill to inform their understand of reciprocals and the inverse property. All of this is part of their study of fraction multiplication and division. Students went to free cone day!

More than One Way to Solve a Problem

Have you ever used the Egyptian method for large digit multiplication? How about the Mayan? Did you know there were different algorithms and methods for solving these types of problems? Fifth grade math students did some research and created displays on algorithms from around the world. Students have been refining and improving their accuracy and efficiency with the United States standard algorithm   During our course of study, the Investigations curriculum asks the students to use at least two ways to solve multi digit multiplication problems. Many have relied on the box method. Because of this study of world algorithms, we have seen the students pick up more strategies to bring to their mathematical problem solving.
