The BFG
This book takes place in 3 different places: Giant Country, England, and the dream place. There are 9 different giants(not including the BFG): Fleshlumpeater, Childchewer, Bonecruncher, Manhugger, Meatdripper, Maidmasher, Gizzardgulper, Bloodbottler, and Butcherboy. And then there's Sophie, and the BFG. Sophie is a little girl. The BFG is the Big Friendly Giant.
Sophie is awake in the middle of the night. She goes to shut the curtains when she sees a tall shadow. It’s the BFG. He sees her and races her off to giant country.Fortunately he doesn't eat ”human beans” like the other giants. They make a plan: the BFG gives the queen a dream where the 9 giants are eating people. She also dreams that there is a girl named Sophie sitting on the window sill. And that there is a BFG who will help capture them. She wakes up to find Sophie sitting on the window sill. Then the BFG leads 9 helicopters to the giants. They lower them into a pit in England.
I think this book is the 2nd best book Roald Dahl has written(I like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory better). I’ve read it a lot before, but it never get’s old. The only part I don’t like is in the beginning it’s kind of boring. The different tastes of the “human bean” are funny. It’s a good book.
Sarah Plain and Tall
Sarah Plain and Tall, by Patricia MacLachlan is about a girl named Anna and a boy named Caleb and their father, Papa. Their mom died when Caleb was born so Papa puts an advertisement in the newspaper for a new wife. They get a note from a woman named Sarah who sees the advertisement and decides to go to Papa’s house. When she gets there, she starts to miss Maine (where she is from), but after a few weeks, she decides that she would rather stay with them because she likes the family a lot. Anna and Caleb are glad Sarah is with them and Anna thinks about a wedding and says it will take place in the summer. One day, Sarah drew a picture but Caleb noticed that there were no colors of the ocean in it. They think she still misses Maine. After that, Sarah went to town and bought three colored pencils: blue, green and white. Caleb said she brought the ocean with her! I think using those colors helped Sarah not miss the ocean so much and they comforted her.
This story shows that even if when something sad happens, like a parent dying, you can still find love and happiness and how people make sacrifices for the ones they love. I would give it 3 out of 5 stars because it could have been more challenging, but overall it was a good story.
Ella Enchanted
“Be obedient!”
Ella Enchanted, by Gail Carson Levine is about a girl who has been given the gift of obedience by a fairy named Lucinda. Lucinda says if Ella’s mom does not like the gift, she can always turn Ella into a squirrel instead. But Ella’s curse stays even as she gets older and older and she realizes that the gift is actually a curse. She gets more and more determined to find Lucinda and break the curse. On her journey, she meets ogres and elves and gnomes. She also meets the prince of Kiira, Prince Charmont. And then, there are Ella’s stepsisters Hattie and Olive. Hattie wears a wig and turns Ella into a maid. Olive wants money and is a horrible speller. Her journey to find Lucinda makes her go through a lot of hard things like almost getting eaten by ogres and also being forced to go to finishing school. She ends up finding Lucinda, but she doesn’t want to help Ella.
The end is a secret I am going to leave for you to find out. I loved reading this book, but sometimes when they speak other languages ogrese and gnomic it’s hard to follow, but it is still fun to try to pronounce. I would give this book 4 out of 5 stars and think it is good for ages 8+.
Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein
Shel Silverstein is one of the greatest children's book authors for poetry. He wrote 3 famous books and many more. The 3 books I love are "The Growing Tree," "A Light in the Attic," and "Where the Sidewalk ends." This review is about "Where the Sidewalk ends."
I will be listing my favorite funniest poems:
1. Hat (p.74): The first poem on my list is "Hat." Why is it funny?
Because the hat was actually a toilet plunger and Dad asked where the toilet plunger went.
2. My Rules (p.74): "My Rules" are about a person wanting to marry somebody and who had a giant list of rules that were so unfair. Like when he rests and his wife has to rake the leaves. And, well, you get the idea.
3. Melinda Mae (p.154-156): Melinda Mae ate a giant whale starting when she was young (p.155) and finished finally when she was 89 years old (p.156) - and all what was left were bones.
"Where the Sidewalk ends" is a great book. I rate the book 5 stars on a scale from 1 to 5 (1=awful, 5= the best).
Eyewitness Books Horse
My first idea is the Tack. The first thing is, saddles, there are 2 different kinds of saddles, 1 is called the Eastern saddle the other one is called the Western saddle. Next is the girth goes under the horses (or ponies) belly and is attached the saddle so the saddle stays in place. Last is the reins, the reins are used to steer the horse. You just pull the reins where you want to go.
My next idea is the different kinds of horses. My favorite horse is the paint horse, it has spots of one color all over. Another type of horse is the curly horse, its hair is curly. I also like a tiger horse. Its legs are really long and also have spots on them.
The last one is Shoes and Shoeing. The first thing they do is the blacksmith cuts off the nail and removes the shoe. Next they Clip the worn layer off and put the new layer down. Third the new iron shoe is made hot in the furnace, using a heavy hammer the blacksmith shapes the shoe. After the shoe has been reheated, it is pressed into the hoof to check the fit and then cools. Lastly the blacksmith nails and hammers it down.
Harriet The Spy By Louise Fitzhugh
Harriet The Spy has an obvious main character: Harriet M. Welsch. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Welsh and lives a wealthy life with a cook and cake (and milk) after school every single day at three-forty. Sounds boring, right? Now wait till you hear this. Believe it or not, Harriet is a spy (as the title suggests) and goes on a spy route after her cake and milk. She goes to certain locations around New York City and collects embarrassing, funny, and sometimes disturbing information about people including her friends. Harriet has many ups and downs with her two best friends, Sport and Janie. Sport, the son of a lazy author, wishes to become a football player or a C.P.A. On the other hand, Janie is becoming a chemist. At certain points in the book, they may be best friends and then fiery enemies. (More on that later)
Here is a bit of info from Harriet’s notebook: “I bet the lady with the cross-eye looks in the mirror and feels just terrible.”
As you can clearly see, Harriet keeps track of “strangers,” too. But one day after school, a game of tag is going on in the park. People are still carrying their schoolbooks and Harriet, like always, has her notebook. (you can see where this is going) Many books are dropped and-- the notebook is in possession of Janie Gibbs. Everyone knows the secret and everyone now hates her. They set up The Spy Catcher Club in Rachel Hennessy’s backyard and build a clubhouse. Harriet, being a spy, finds out about this and turns miserable. But the club splits in two and questions the leadership of bridge-playing, tea-drinking girls. It ends in a sort of a silent truce between Janie, Sport, and Harriet.
I didn’t really like the ending. To be honest, many parts in the book had me on the verge of tears. But, it is also a bit funny. The way Harriet writes notes is very mean-- it’s not god to do what she did in the first place. On the other hand, The Spy Catcher Club wasn’t very nice, either. They were just making her feel bad. I don’t really know what to think of this book.

Ella Enchanted
Ella Enchanted was of course enchanting because it wasn't one of those books when a princess meets a prince at a ball and they get married right away. In this book the prince met a girl who's mother had just passed ,at first they both just had little crush's on each other (and you now how when you have a crush on someone you don't want to tell them right away)so they just became friends.the book was also sad because of Ella and her two step sisters .She had to go to proper school and all the girls in the school made fun of her because they thought she was never going to become proper but there was another girl that they did the same to and they both became best friends but later on Ella couldn't stand being teased by the girls so she runs back home. The book was very believable. And Ella had a spell on her where she had to obey what she was told,like Amelia Bedilia but just a little bit more serious.
The Name of This Book is Secret
The Name of This Book is Secret is a fantasy. The two main characters are Cassandra (Cass) and Max-Ernest and they’re both 11 years-old. Cass has a lot of stuff in her backpack, and she’s always prepared for adventures, and she’s a survivalist. Max-Ernest is Cass’s friend and he has had a hard life, because his parents are divorced and he has a speech disorder. Together, Cass and Max-Ernest are looking for Pietro Bergamo’s (a dead magician) secret. The villains are Ms. Mauvais and Dr. L and they spend the story trying to get Pietro Bergamo’s notebook, because they’re looking for his secret, too.
Cass and Max-Ernest are trying to figure out Pietro’s Secret which I think is how to live forever. Ms. Mauvais and Dr. L are trying to stop them, because they want to get his secret for themselves. So they even kidnap Benjamin Blake (a student from school), because they think his art is special and has clues. Cass feels bad for Benjamin and thinks it’s a good idea to go and rescue him, which she does with Max-Ernest. Then they go home and P.B. gives Cass a survivalist backpack and gives Max-Ernest a decoder.
I think this book is confusing and was hard to understand. It was hard, because in the middle the author kept explaining why he was writing about the secret and punishing himself. I don’t want to read the next book in the series, because this book was a little too hard. If other people like fantasy, then this is a good book for them, because there was a lot of make believe. I would rather read realistic fiction or non-fiction.
