Writing about Summer Reading
Hello rising fourth graders and rising fifth graders,
We are very much looking forward to getting to know the 2015-2016 Thunder and Lightning class!
One way we get to know each other and stay in touch is by writing about reading. We will start this summer.
What do we have to do for summer reading?
Over the summer each rising fourth and fifth grader needs to read a total of four books and write a review of each one. In summary, each student:
What is a review?
Choose from one of the six formats that we've used this year. You will write three five-sentence paragraphs. Here's a reminder if you need it.
What is the required read?
As always, one of the summer reads is required. Students entering Grades 4 & 5 will all read The BFG by Roald Dahl.
What happens with the book reviews?
After you email your reviews to all three teachers, they will be posted on our blog. Maybe someone will read your book based on your review!

- Reads The BFG (required read)
- Chooses three other books (each one from a different genre)
- Writes a review after finishing each book
- Emails the reviews to all three teachers: mmccallihan@mustardseedschool.org, achoi@mustardseedschool.org, and eemma@mustardseedschool.org.
What is a review?
For Rising Fifth Graders:
Choose from one of the six formats that we've used this year. You will write three five-sentence paragraphs. Here's a reminder if you need it.
For Rising Fourth Graders:
Each written response is to be a one five-sentence paragraph. The paragraph will state the reader's opinion of the book with three specific examples supporting the opinion. What is the required read?
