The Last Two Weeks

We are down to the last two weeks of school! We cannot believe that we are so close to the end of this year. On Monday in Worship, Gary Lawrence had us list one good thing that has happened this year, and one good thing that happened that day. Mrs. McCallihan's one good thing for the year is the way this community has come together! As we write this a fifth grader is helping a fourth grader with notes on reading. Another is sharing supplies with her neighbor. We are a giving, compassionate community!

 The two weeks will go quickly, and there are many events that you will want to make note of. Please keep in mind that the students have math, writing, and reading homework due Friday, June 5 and June 12. Also:

  • Drama Night                  Friday, June 5, 6 p.m.
  • Buddies Picnic              Tuesday, June 9, 10:50-12:20 (rain date Thursday, June 11@Pier C)
  • STEAM Presentations  Wednesday, June 10, 1:15-2:10
  • Choristers Open Class   Friday, June 12, 12:20-1 p.m.
  • Field Day                       Monday, June 15 (1/2 day--noon dismissal)
  • 1/2 Day                          Tuesday, June 16 (Noon dismissal)
  • Commencement             Tuesday, June 16, 7 p.m. All students are to attend
  • Last Day                        Wednesday, June 17, (1/2 day--noon dismissal)

Students studied the rules for possessive nouns.  The placement of that little apostrophe changes everything! Students created cartoons that demonstrate the difference between singular and plural possessives. Here are a couple things we noticed about their work: The students' drawings are creative. Each student's idea is unique. Students have been completing projects in math. Fourth grade students are ordering fractions on a number line.   The fifth graders are working hard, too. Fifth graders are learning good note taking skills and are using that skill to inform their understand of reciprocals and the inverse property. All of this is part of their study of fraction multiplication and division. Students went to free cone day!

More than One Way to Solve a Problem

Have you ever used the Egyptian method for large digit multiplication? How about the Mayan? Did you know there were different algorithms and methods for solving these types of problems? Fifth grade math students did some research and created displays on algorithms from around the world. Students have been refining and improving their accuracy and efficiency with the United States standard algorithm   During our course of study, the Investigations curriculum asks the students to use at least two ways to solve multi digit multiplication problems. Many have relied on the box method. Because of this study of world algorithms, we have seen the students pick up more strategies to bring to their mathematical problem solving.
