It's getting hot

Hi Thunder and Lightning Community, 
Today is a great moment to remind ourselves of the following: 

  1. Please make sure your T & L student has a water bottle to refill during the day. 
  2. Dress for warm weather and remember the dress code.

Dress Code:
When choosing school clothing, choose clothes that are neat, practical, comfortable, modest, and safe. Dress in ways that permit activity and that are appropriate to a place of work. The following guidelines should be followed:

  • Pants, shorts, skirts, and dresses must fall below the student’s fingers when his/her arms are at his/her sides.
  • Shirts should cover the body without falling off shoulders or exposing the torso. 
  • Within this guideline, sleeveless shirts and tank-type shirts may be worn, providing the sleeves do not expose the chest, back, or torso and straps are wider than two fingers width.
  • Undergarments should be completely covered at all times.
  • All of these guidelines apply to a student’s clothing even during times of movement. 
  • Clothing and gear may not make reference to violence, sex, alcohol, drugs (including tobacco), other criminal activity or profanity, neither should there be any words written across the seat of a students pants.
  • Shoes must permit students to run and walk safely at all times. Students must wear shoes that have backs.
  • During cold weather, students must have clothing that is appropriate for outdoor activities. Hat, gloves or mittens, scarves, and a heavy coat are essential for health and safety of children.
  • Coats, hats and sunglasses may not be worn indoors.
  • Students who are not dressed according to these guidelines, will be asked to change and, if necessary, call home for a change of clothes.

Students studied the rules for possessive nouns.  The placement of that little apostrophe changes everything! Students created cartoons that demonstrate the difference between singular and plural possessives. Here are a couple things we noticed about their work: The students' drawings are creative. Each student's idea is unique. Students have been completing projects in math. Fourth grade students are ordering fractions on a number line.   The fifth graders are working hard, too. Fifth graders are learning good note taking skills and are using that skill to inform their understand of reciprocals and the inverse property. All of this is part of their study of fraction multiplication and division. Students went to free cone day!

More than One Way to Solve a Problem

Have you ever used the Egyptian method for large digit multiplication? How about the Mayan? Did you know there were different algorithms and methods for solving these types of problems? Fifth grade math students did some research and created displays on algorithms from around the world. Students have been refining and improving their accuracy and efficiency with the United States standard algorithm   During our course of study, the Investigations curriculum asks the students to use at least two ways to solve multi digit multiplication problems. Many have relied on the box method. Because of this study of world algorithms, we have seen the students pick up more strategies to bring to their mathematical problem solving.
