What is Ascension Day?
Ascension Day remembers and celebrates the ascension of Christ into Heaven. Also known as the Feast of Ascension, Ascension Day occurs on the Thursday, 40 days after Easter.

The History of Ascension Day

As told in the accounts in the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles, Jesus appeared to many of his disciples during the 40 days following his resurrection. On the 40th day, he came again to the Apostles and led them out to the Mount of Olives where he instructed them to wait in Jerusalem for the promise of the Holy Spirit. Then, as they were watching, he ascended into clouds. As they continued to watch, two angels appeared and declared to them that, just as he ascended, Jesus would return in glory.


According to Saint Augustine of Hippo, one of the early church fathers, the Feast of Ascension originated with the Apostles. John Chrysostom and Gregory of Nyssa, contemporaries of Augustine, refer to it as being one of the oldest feasts practiced by the Church, possibly going as far back as AD 68.


How We Celebrate Ascension
Thunder and Lightning will lead the Ascension Worship celebration with verses and songs on Thursday, May 14, at 11 a.m., in the gym. Parents are welcomed to intend. On Tuesday, May 5, students will be assigned words to be memorized as a part of the celebration. Also, students and teachers will wear white or blue, or a combination of both for the celebration. There will be a photo session at the end of Worship.

Students studied the rules for possessive nouns.  The placement of that little apostrophe changes everything! Students created cartoons that demonstrate the difference between singular and plural possessives. Here are a couple things we noticed about their work: The students' drawings are creative. Each student's idea is unique. Students have been completing projects in math. Fourth grade students are ordering fractions on a number line.   The fifth graders are working hard, too. Fifth graders are learning good note taking skills and are using that skill to inform their understand of reciprocals and the inverse property. All of this is part of their study of fraction multiplication and division. Students went to free cone day!

More than One Way to Solve a Problem

Have you ever used the Egyptian method for large digit multiplication? How about the Mayan? Did you know there were different algorithms and methods for solving these types of problems? Fifth grade math students did some research and created displays on algorithms from around the world. Students have been refining and improving their accuracy and efficiency with the United States standard algorithm   During our course of study, the Investigations curriculum asks the students to use at least two ways to solve multi digit multiplication problems. Many have relied on the box method. Because of this study of world algorithms, we have seen the students pick up more strategies to bring to their mathematical problem solving.
