Important Dates to Remember and Upcoming Happenings

We have a couple of busy weeks before we break for Easter vacation--Palms celebration and STEAM sharing are two examples. Here are the important dates to remember:

Palms Celebration--Friday, March 27
Way of the Cross--Tuesday, March 31
STEAM sharing--Wednesday, April 1 (1:20)
Passover--Thursday, April 2 (early dismissal 1 p.m.)
Easter Break--Friday, April 3-Monday, April 13
School resumes--Tuesday, April 14 (return Lent Cans)
MoMA field trip--Friday, April 17


We also have a couple of events that you will be receiving forms for acknowledgement. First, during spring break, students will be a part of an art experience that also doubles as a school beautifying project. Students will create Jackson Pollack style paintings on the ladies restroom doors. Look for a Google Form coming soon with all the information.

Secondly, students will be going to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) on Friday, April 17, to participate in an art studio experience. A MoMA art educator will guide students through several pieces of art within the museum, and then help them create their own piece in one of the art classrooms. After that we will tour the Jacob Lawrence exhibit. We will take the ferry and free ferry bus for this trip. More details will be coming in a Google Form.

Students studied the rules for possessive nouns.  The placement of that little apostrophe changes everything! Students created cartoons that demonstrate the difference between singular and plural possessives. Here are a couple things we noticed about their work: The students' drawings are creative. Each student's idea is unique. Students have been completing projects in math. Fourth grade students are ordering fractions on a number line.   The fifth graders are working hard, too. Fifth graders are learning good note taking skills and are using that skill to inform their understand of reciprocals and the inverse property. All of this is part of their study of fraction multiplication and division. Students went to free cone day!

More than One Way to Solve a Problem

Have you ever used the Egyptian method for large digit multiplication? How about the Mayan? Did you know there were different algorithms and methods for solving these types of problems? Fifth grade math students did some research and created displays on algorithms from around the world. Students have been refining and improving their accuracy and efficiency with the United States standard algorithm   During our course of study, the Investigations curriculum asks the students to use at least two ways to solve multi digit multiplication problems. Many have relied on the box method. Because of this study of world algorithms, we have seen the students pick up more strategies to bring to their mathematical problem solving.
