Remembering Martin Luther King's Dream


In preparation for creating artwork for their Martin Luther King Jr celebration, Thunder and Lightning read the book The Great Migration. Written and illustrated by Jacob Lawrence, it tells the story of the migration of African Americans from southern states to northern states between 1916 and 1919. We discussed the reasons for this migration and examined the style of Jacob Lawrence’s art.

 We chose to use Jacob Lawrence’s simple colors and shapes in our collaborative piece. Our collage represents the march from Selma to Montgomery as part of the Selma Voting Rights Movement. Martin Luther King was part of the second march. This year is the 50th anniversary of the marches. We blended two photos from the march and consulted the March 1965 cover of LIFE magazine for the correct colors. Fifth graders worked in pairs to make the large figures at the front of the collage, fourth graders made the smaller, background figures. 








The collage will hang in the community room for the next four weeks to complement the upper school worship theme as 8th graders lead homilies about people of faith throughout history. Afterwards it is our hope that the collage will find a permanent home on display on the fourth floor.

Students studied the rules for possessive nouns.  The placement of that little apostrophe changes everything! Students created cartoons that demonstrate the difference between singular and plural possessives. Here are a couple things we noticed about their work: The students' drawings are creative. Each student's idea is unique. Students have been completing projects in math. Fourth grade students are ordering fractions on a number line.   The fifth graders are working hard, too. Fifth graders are learning good note taking skills and are using that skill to inform their understand of reciprocals and the inverse property. All of this is part of their study of fraction multiplication and division. Students went to free cone day!

More than One Way to Solve a Problem

Have you ever used the Egyptian method for large digit multiplication? How about the Mayan? Did you know there were different algorithms and methods for solving these types of problems? Fifth grade math students did some research and created displays on algorithms from around the world. Students have been refining and improving their accuracy and efficiency with the United States standard algorithm   During our course of study, the Investigations curriculum asks the students to use at least two ways to solve multi digit multiplication problems. Many have relied on the box method. Because of this study of world algorithms, we have seen the students pick up more strategies to bring to their mathematical problem solving.
