Possible Flamingo Day

Hello Parents!
We have assured the students that the possibility of a snow day will be totally jinxed if we talk about it. We are working hard to pretend today is a normal day. When we need to address the pending weather event we are calling it a "Flamingo Day" thus avoiding the jinxing.

 There is plenty of work that can and should be completed at home in case we don't have school any days this week:

 Regular Weekly Homework
  • Math Packet
  • Spell Well Lesson 12
  • Vocabulary Lesson 12
Reading
  • Read a nonfiction book
  • Reading Response (4th grade-3 paragraphs, 5th grade-5 paragraphs)

STEAM
  • Finish project work
  • Prepare for presentation on Wednesday (and practice)
Writing
  • Essay on Harlem Renaissance person is due Friday regardless of how many days we miss. (4th grade-3 paragraphs, 5th grade-5 paragraphs)

This site has short video lessons. We have used this site to help explain various geometric principles.

 Khan Academy
If you haven't used this site before it will take a minute to sign up and set up. But once students are logged in they are offered problems and areas of study tailored for them.

 Dance Mat
Want to improve your keyboarding skills? Try this site.

 Multiplication.com
Almost all of us can improve in our efficiency when it comes to multiplication.

Students studied the rules for possessive nouns.  The placement of that little apostrophe changes everything! Students created cartoons that demonstrate the difference between singular and plural possessives. Here are a couple things we noticed about their work: The students' drawings are creative. Each student's idea is unique. Students have been completing projects in math. Fourth grade students are ordering fractions on a number line.   The fifth graders are working hard, too. Fifth graders are learning good note taking skills and are using that skill to inform their understand of reciprocals and the inverse property. All of this is part of their study of fraction multiplication and division. Students went to free cone day!

More than One Way to Solve a Problem

Have you ever used the Egyptian method for large digit multiplication? How about the Mayan? Did you know there were different algorithms and methods for solving these types of problems? Fifth grade math students did some research and created displays on algorithms from around the world. Students have been refining and improving their accuracy and efficiency with the United States standard algorithm   During our course of study, the Investigations curriculum asks the students to use at least two ways to solve multi digit multiplication problems. Many have relied on the box method. Because of this study of world algorithms, we have seen the students pick up more strategies to bring to their mathematical problem solving.
