I love math

Today Mr. Lawrence inspired our problem solving skills. He presented the "Matchstick Problem." He gave us time to work, think and act out our thinking.

We wowed him with our vocabulary: parallelogram, equilateral, quadrilateral

He led us in a brainstorm of what mathematicians do. Our list includes the cheeky and the thoughtful:

  1. they do math
  2. mathematicians figure out equations
  3. they think the foundations of math we do everyday
  4. they study math
  5. they love math
  6. they write math books
  7. counting
  8. solve problems
  9. solve puzzles
  10. multiplying
  11. find patterns
  12. divide
  13. subtract
  14. add
  15. they square. 
  16. measure
  17. find answers to problems
  18. search for ideas
  19. think 
  20. express what they are thinking about math 
  21. geometry 
One fifth grader shared that based on last year's math challenge, the Magic Square,  he sometimes takes the hymn numbers at church and creates his own Magic Square. Mr. Lawrence said that those are the kinds of games we get to play once we have ideas in our mind.

Students studied the rules for possessive nouns.  The placement of that little apostrophe changes everything! Students created cartoons that demonstrate the difference between singular and plural possessives. Here are a couple things we noticed about their work: The students' drawings are creative. Each student's idea is unique. Students have been completing projects in math. Fourth grade students are ordering fractions on a number line.   The fifth graders are working hard, too. Fifth graders are learning good note taking skills and are using that skill to inform their understand of reciprocals and the inverse property. All of this is part of their study of fraction multiplication and division. Students went to free cone day!

More than One Way to Solve a Problem

Have you ever used the Egyptian method for large digit multiplication? How about the Mayan? Did you know there were different algorithms and methods for solving these types of problems? Fifth grade math students did some research and created displays on algorithms from around the world. Students have been refining and improving their accuracy and efficiency with the United States standard algorithm   During our course of study, the Investigations curriculum asks the students to use at least two ways to solve multi digit multiplication problems. Many have relied on the box method. Because of this study of world algorithms, we have seen the students pick up more strategies to bring to their mathematical problem solving.
