Language arts and Spanish collaborated recently so that Thunder & Lightning could create images that inspired word play in two languages. Students selected a classroom object that they abstracted through either a black and white image or photograph. The goal was to somehow obscure its identity so we could imagine it become something else.
Students used a specific format to help them communicate their ideas. They learned to identify different parts of speech and use a suffix to quickly expand their vocabulary. They compared the two languages without translating the poem. They worked hard to memorize and recite their poems. Below is the format we used to write our adapted Cinquian poem in case you would like to make an everyday object come to life as well.
