Parent-Teacher Conferences

Hi Thunder and Lightning Community,

Thank you for your quick response to our conference sign ups. We wish that all three of us could meet with each of you. Unfortunately, that cannot be. We were unclear in our communication with you regarding signing up, and our plan did not match the reality of time and space.

You will see that the conference schedule has been cleared.
Please sign up to meet with only one teacher. We do a great deal of team teaching so each of us is familiar with your child's strengths and areas to grow.

We are truly sorry for the inconvenience and are so grateful (in advance) for your flexibility and understanding. We will certainly learn from this moment and plan for clearer communication in the future.

Just a reminder that Parent-Teacher Conferences are coming up soon - on Thursday evening, and Friday, December 4 & 5. You should have already received an email from Ms. Olukun with a link to the sign up sheet for conferences. Please contact the main office if you need to sign up for a time.

Please also keep in mind that this is a parents only meeting. In this meeting, progress reports and other important information will be shared with parents. This does mean, then, that child care arrangements will need to be arranged for this time.

Finally, keep in mind that there is no school for students in Trees, Sky, or Grades K-5 on Friday, December 5, for Parent-Teacher Conferences. Only students in the Rivers and in Grades 6-8 will have school on Friday, December 5.

Students studied the rules for possessive nouns.  The placement of that little apostrophe changes everything! Students created cartoons that demonstrate the difference between singular and plural possessives. Here are a couple things we noticed about their work: The students' drawings are creative. Each student's idea is unique. Students have been completing projects in math. Fourth grade students are ordering fractions on a number line.   The fifth graders are working hard, too. Fifth graders are learning good note taking skills and are using that skill to inform their understand of reciprocals and the inverse property. All of this is part of their study of fraction multiplication and division. Students went to free cone day!

More than One Way to Solve a Problem

Have you ever used the Egyptian method for large digit multiplication? How about the Mayan? Did you know there were different algorithms and methods for solving these types of problems? Fifth grade math students did some research and created displays on algorithms from around the world. Students have been refining and improving their accuracy and efficiency with the United States standard algorithm   During our course of study, the Investigations curriculum asks the students to use at least two ways to solve multi digit multiplication problems. Many have relied on the box method. Because of this study of world algorithms, we have seen the students pick up more strategies to bring to their mathematical problem solving.
