It's Cold Out There!
Students should not wear coats inside (per dress code), but should wear layers so that they are neither too hot, nor too cold during the day. Such are the realities of an old heating system. Children also need hats and gloves/mittens - to be always prepared for outdoor activity.

- If it is dry, if the outdoor time is brief, and if students have gloves/mittens/hats, then frostbite is not usually a problem.
- If it is damp, windy, icy, and you are considering a longer time of play in temperatures or wind chill below 20 degrees, then staying inside is an option to consider.
- Teachers also have to consider the need for children to be outside - in the sun, in the outdoor air.
- Children are healthier, happier, more focused learners, if they go outside on a daily basis. We as a school strongly promote a daily outdoor time for good health - for 30 minute park time. That is, we seldom stay inside and will often choose to at least get students out for a walk, rather than stay indoors. This is true for all ages.
Finally, they also have to consider the realities of the park equipment, which vary greatly, depending on the age.
- It is often the case that the climbing equipment and swings are in good shape, while the basketball courts are iced over and unsafe.
- Teachers will make decisions based on the park realities and the great importance of keeping children active and what it takes to do that. (That is, sometimes, the gym is the best place for students to be active.)
