Homework
  • Homework has begun!  
  • Homework is assigned on Mondays and needs to be completed by Friday mornings.
  • The homework will essentially be the same each week: 
    • Reading-30 minutes per night
    • Spelling-Each week, students will complete one Spellwell lesson.  All pages are labeled (Monday's Homework, Tuesday's Homework, etc.); this can help your child pace his/her work.  All exercises in the book use the week's spelling words, so the possible answers are limited!  Your child is only required to do the Alternative Homework assignment if he/she has a star (*) next to it.
    • Vocabulary will be introduced this week and will begin next week.  Each week, students will complete one lesson in their Vocabulary From Classical Roots book.  Each lesson contains a word list with definitions as well as various exercises. 
    • Math-Students will complete a packet each week.  Math homework will begin next week.  
  • It may take a few weeks for your child to figure out how to pace his/her work.  We have worked with the children to figure out how to plan the week based on how much free time students have each evening.
  • All homework assignments are explained in detail in class, so your child should be able to explain assignments to you.

Technology Acceptable Use Agreement
  • Thank you!  Many of you have sent back your signed agreement.
  • We are still waiting on a few agreements, so that we can start using laptops in the classroom. 
PE
  • PE starts on Tuesday, September 23rd.
  • Your child will either have PE on Tuesdays and Thursdays OR Wednesdays and Fridays.  You and your children will find out the first PE groups next week.  
Dismissal
  • When school is over, we will be lining up along the fence a little closer to Clinton and 5th than we have done in the past.  Please walk down there to pick up your child by 3:15pm.
  • Here is the procedure for Thunder and Lightning Dismissal: 
    • We do not allow any child to be dismissed until our whole class has exited the building and is standing along the fence.  
    • At that time both teachers will head to the front of the line.  When students see both teachers together, they may say goodbye to both (and allow us to visually locate their parents) before leaving.  
    • With such a large class, this may take a while, so please be patient. 
  • Rainy Day Dismissal
    • If it is raining significantly, please pick up your child outside the door closest to to Clinton and 5th.  We will dismiss students one-by-one from inside the building when we see you.

Students studied the rules for possessive nouns.  The placement of that little apostrophe changes everything! Students created cartoons that demonstrate the difference between singular and plural possessives. Here are a couple things we noticed about their work: The students' drawings are creative. Each student's idea is unique. Students have been completing projects in math. Fourth grade students are ordering fractions on a number line.   The fifth graders are working hard, too. Fifth graders are learning good note taking skills and are using that skill to inform their understand of reciprocals and the inverse property. All of this is part of their study of fraction multiplication and division. Students went to free cone day!

More than One Way to Solve a Problem

Have you ever used the Egyptian method for large digit multiplication? How about the Mayan? Did you know there were different algorithms and methods for solving these types of problems? Fifth grade math students did some research and created displays on algorithms from around the world. Students have been refining and improving their accuracy and efficiency with the United States standard algorithm   During our course of study, the Investigations curriculum asks the students to use at least two ways to solve multi digit multiplication problems. Many have relied on the box method. Because of this study of world algorithms, we have seen the students pick up more strategies to bring to their mathematical problem solving.
