The Tale of Despereaux

Despereaux was sent to the dungeon because he was not obeying the mouse laws. But then he escaped because Gregory the jailor put him on a tray that Miggery Sow brought up to the light where Despereaux and his family lived and the Mouse Council was held. Miggery was sold to another man by her father. The other man made Miggery call him Uncle. Miggery always wanted to be a princess. One day she saw the royal family pass by on a horse. The princess waved to Miggery but she didn’t wave back. After a while Miggery called out it’s my birthday! But they didn't hear her. At the castle where Despereaux lived, the royal family was in the banquet hall with the kings men and other special people. They were eating the Cooks soup when a rat climbed up to the chandelier and only the princess noticed but no one heard her when she said there’s a rat because the music was playing so loud. Once the princess said that the rat jumped off the chandelier and landed in the Queens bowl of soup, the Queen stared there then she died. After the queen died the King made one law saying no eating soup and another saying no rats. Miggery and Princess Pea were sent to the dungeon and Despereaux went down to try to save them but the rats wouldn’t let him. Finally they escaped and they lived happily every after.

I liked the part when the king thought that Despereaux was a bug but the princess knew that Despereaux was a mouse. I enjoyed the book.



The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses

The girl loved wild horses and she loved sitting on the stallion. One day she had to go back. The stallion called for her from the hill but she didn’t answer. Finally she got to go back. A few days later the people thought she turned into a horse.

I enjoyed this book because you normally don’t get to see a girl turning into a horse.

Students studied the rules for possessive nouns.  The placement of that little apostrophe changes everything! Students created cartoons that demonstrate the difference between singular and plural possessives. Here are a couple things we noticed about their work: The students' drawings are creative. Each student's idea is unique. Students have been completing projects in math. Fourth grade students are ordering fractions on a number line.   The fifth graders are working hard, too. Fifth graders are learning good note taking skills and are using that skill to inform their understand of reciprocals and the inverse property. All of this is part of their study of fraction multiplication and division. Students went to free cone day!

More than One Way to Solve a Problem

Have you ever used the Egyptian method for large digit multiplication? How about the Mayan? Did you know there were different algorithms and methods for solving these types of problems? Fifth grade math students did some research and created displays on algorithms from around the world. Students have been refining and improving their accuracy and efficiency with the United States standard algorithm   During our course of study, the Investigations curriculum asks the students to use at least two ways to solve multi digit multiplication problems. Many have relied on the box method. Because of this study of world algorithms, we have seen the students pick up more strategies to bring to their mathematical problem solving.
